Robert Schoneman photographed Green Bay & Western's Alco RS-27 locomotive
in Plover.
The locomotive is sporting a brand-new paint job with the large
"GBW" letters in a serif font and sitting in the maze of
tracks which makes up the small yard where the Stevens Point Branch
meets the main line.
This photo is undated, but based on the paint job I'd date it about
1989 or so. This is one of my favorite photos of a GBW locomotive.
The black-and-white checkerboard pattern on the side sill was a Green Bay
Route feature which goes back to the early days of diesel power, when yard
locomotives carried flashing light fixtures attached to their frames, a
necessity for the numerous grade crossing and close running on Green Bay
streets.
A thanks goes out to Bob Schoneman
for sharing this photo.
