| Diesel loco #503 holds a unique position on the Green Bay
Route roster, since there were actually two different Alco FA-1s with
        that same number.
Most all sources (if not all of them) say GB&W 503 was delivered
        in 12/1947, along with KGB&W 501 and KGB&W 502. So the original
        FA-1 roster was:

          - KGB&W 501

          - KGB&W 502

          - GB&W 503

        In 4/1949, two more FA-1s were added, KGB&W 503 and GB&W 507.
At that time GB&W 503 was renumbered to GB&W 506 to avoid
duplicate numbers. So the roster at that time was:

          - KGB&W 501 (1947)

          -
        KGB&W 502 (1947)

          - GB&W 506 (1947) ex GBW 503

          - KGB&W 503
        (1949)

          - GB&W 507 (1949)

What seems puzzling is that a list the builders photo
at left is of  503-507 Logically, this should be a photo of KGB&W 503 and

        GB&W 507, built in 1949.
Both 503 and 507 in this photo are lettered for GB&W
        but #503
should have been a KGB&W locomotive!
So that raises a couple of questions:
        1. Is the image at left  actually a builders photo? Does anyone
have a copy where they can verify the numbers on the locos? (The one on
the right looks like 507, but the one on the left looks a little fuzzy.)
Is it from the second set of FA-1 engines built in 1949?
        2. In 1949, was a loco delivered as GB&W 503(2)? And then
renumbered as KGB&W 503 while at the same time the original
GB&W 503(1) renumbered to GB&W 506? This seems like a lot of redundant
work, even for a railroad. |
