Conductor Randy Schultz talks things over with brakeman Rich Hanke
prior to departing with Train No. 2 on October 3, 1992.
Conductor Schultz was one in a line of Schultzes who worked for the
GB&W as his father, uncle (both engineers) and cousin were also
employees. When the crew districts were realigned in 1972, the
crew change point moved from Wisconsin Rapids west to Merrillan,
where the Green Bay crew would rest while another crew ran to
Winona. When the local motel in Merrillan achieved fleabag status,
Green Bay crews used a company van to drive the 12 miles south to
Black River Falls for better accommodations.
