It's July 1982 and Green Bay & Western #312 (Alco C-424) leads a trio of power on the head end of westbound Train No. 1, the fast-freight cross-state run.
GBW #312 shows off the unique "chevron" paint scheme. Introduced in February 1982, this was the only loco on the roster to ever get this paint scheme. The side of the cab bore the name Homer E. McGee. This picture was taken at Hudson Street in west Green Bay. The crossing in the background (next to the Boys Club building) is Oneida Street. The grade crossing with the Milwaukee Road is just ahead of #312. Check out the plume of smoke! It seems like nothing could smoke -- or sound -- like an Alco. Maybe they built them that way on purpose so it would be easier to convince railroads to change from steam, as they still seemed like a steam engine coming from a distance!
