These two locomotives provided a combined fifty-four hundred horsepower to haul the train on its eastbound journey across central Wisconsin.  The first order of business was to tackle the steep grade up to the Mississippi River bridge, as shown in this photo.  (This track is still in place and used, but now trees block this view of the old GBW right of way.)

It's the summer of 1972 and the Green Bay & Western's program to repaint their locomotives in the all-red paint scheme is in progress, as evidenced by the different paint jobs on these two locomotives.  GBW #314 was freshly painted in June 1972, while #315 would be one of the last locos to visit the paint shop in April 1973.
